White Oak: White Oak tends to be light tan to medium brown with a pinkish tinge. Quarter sawn lumber tends to have straight grains with a pattern with prominent ray flecks of silver.
Characteristics: White Oak is extremely durable making it excellent for tight cooperage applications and boat building. It is very resistant to rot and preservative treatment. This hard wood has medium bending and crushing strength. Its low stiffness makes it an exceptional steam bending wood. White Oak accepts stains, glues, finishes, and polishes well. It takes nails and screws well but pre-boring is advised.
Common Uses: This wood is commonly used for veneer, furniture, mouldings, paneling, joinery, plywood, shingles, flooring, doors, and interior trim. It is also used for kitchen cabinets, heavy construction, shakes, architectural millwork, ladder rungs, railroad ties and caskets.
